Cambridge, Massachusetts
A place where ideas become working systems.
Cambridge has a long history of bringing knowledge into practical use. Its universities, laboratories, industrial workshops, and startup communities have helped shape modern computing, biotechnology, and the businesses built around them.
Centuries of inquiry. Generations of invention.
Harvard was founded in 1636. MIT moved across the Charles River to Cambridge in 1916, expanding its capacity for engineering education and experimental research. Together, these institutions helped establish the city as a meeting place for scientific inquiry and practical invention.
Cambridge also has deep roots in artificial intelligence. MIT’s Artificial Intelligence Project began in 1959. Its later relationship with the Laboratory for Computer Science brought together work on reasoning, computation, and systems that continues through MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory.
Kendall Square: from industrial district to innovation community.
Kendall Square’s transformation was built over decades. Former factories, warehouses, and underused land became places for research and new companies. Biotechnology pioneers such as Biogen helped demonstrate what could happen when scientific talent, engineering, and entrepreneurship developed close together.
That startup tradition includes Cambridge Innovation Center, founded in 1999. Its Cambridge campus became an early home for HubSpot and teams behind Android—examples of how shared spaces and relationships can help young companies develop into something much larger.
